Many commentators have spoken of the social and mental pressures of “lockdown”, however, the concept of being in lockdown with someone you’re no longer compatible with hasn’t been explored in detail yet.

One of our specialist subjects at Investment & Retirement Solutions Ltd is the financial aspects of divorce and pension sharing orders in particular. Chartered Financial Planner and Director Paul Corner is a member of “Resolution” (The Solicitors Family Law Association) and will be participating in “Good Divorce Week 2020”.

Why? Tom MacInnes, chief analyst for Citizens Advice, said: “We know that this pandemic has put an enormous strain on people financially but our data shows that strain is also being felt in people’s relationships.” The following graph shows the marked increase of weekly hits on Citizens Advice’s “getting a divorce” web page:

Good Divorce Week is an annual campaign that aims to promote practical and constructive ways for separating parents to put the needs of their children first. Organised by Resolution, a community of more than 6,500 family justice professionals, this year the campaign focuses around the benefits of early legal advice, as the organisation prepares to re-launch its public-facing Code of Practice.

Resolution members believe the process of separating, sorting out finances and arranging childcare should be done in a way that minimises conflict and keeps the best interests of any children involved at the heart of proceedings.

There is no silver bullet approach to divorce, as every family is different. However, by seeking early professional advice, couples have the benefit of considering a range of options and making a decision that is most suitable to them.

To help in promoting the benefits of early legal advice, during Good Divorce Week, lawyers, mediators and financial advisors across the country will be offering 30-minute free advice sessions to those families who need it, including in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Leicestershire.

With ongoing COVID restrictions and concerns, Investment & Retirement Solutions are happy to conduct meetings by telephone, Google Meet, Microsoft Skype, Microsoft Teams or Zoom for those people who are not ready to meet in person.

Resolution member, Paul Corner of Investment & Retirement Solutions Ltd will be offering free advice sessions during Good Divorce Week. Speaking about the campaign, Paul said:

“It’s very difficult for parents when they make that tough decision to separate, and often there is a significant impact upon children. That’s why I am delighted to support Good Divorce Week to promote a constructive approach to this often emotionally charged matter.

“No one ‘wins’ when divorcing and we think it’s really important that both parties fully understand the financial implications, options and solutions of their breakup, making every penny count for the benefit of all”

“This is an opportunity for couples to fully understand all of their rights and the options open to them and separate in the most harmonious way possible.

“Far too many families have little-to-no access to professional legal advice when it comes to divorce. The free advice we are offering will give separating couples the confidence and knowledge to make the best decisions for them and their family with minimal conflict.”
